7 Best Cherry Blossom Photoshoot Spots in Kyoto & Nara, Japan

If you know me or follow me on insta, you probably know I've been visiting Japan during the cherry blossom season in the past years for personal travel and photoshoots. Both times I was lucky enough to experience full bloom in Kyoto and Nara, two of the oldest and most beautiful cities with countless temples and beautifully curated cherry blossom trees.

I've spent days in both cities ticking off the list of best cherry blossom viewing spots and have discovered my very own favorite places. Some of them you can see in Yiting & Chen's engagement session in Nara last year, but I have so many more to share. So today I'll be sharing:

my favorite spots for shooting cherry blossom sessions in Kyoto and nara

#1 Hirano Shrine, Kyoto

The moment I stepped inside the park I was overwhelmed by the fact that my sight was completed filled with cherry blossoms. Though the park is very popular among locals and tourists, you'll be able to find a quieter corner which makes it perfect for photoshoots.

#2 Arashiyama, Kyoto

Arashiyama is a whole different area than the center of Kyoto. Most people visit it for the famous bamboo forest, but I'll recommend the streets and random corners with traditional Japanese houses. It's one of my favorite places for pre-wedding photoshoots because it has so much potential. I can create different scenes with the traditional streets, backyards with cherry blossom trees, mountains full of greenery, tea houses, temples...

#3 Nara Park, Nara

Perhaps the most iconic photo you've seen of Nara is taken at Nara Park with the charming deers underneath the cherry blossom trees. My heart literally melt the first time I was there. Personally I find Nara much more suitable for photoshoots compared to Kyoto, because again it's less crowded, and the deers allow for lots of natural interaction which is always a great way to bring out genuine emotion. If you are an animal lover and have a soft spot for these adorable creatures, definitely go for Nara park!

#4 Yasui Konpiragū, Kyoto

A small temple not too far from Gion area. What makes it different is the shape of the cherry blossom trees here. The low branches makes for interesting framing and composition.

#6 Nanzen-ji, Kyoto

I went to Nanzen-ji on an raining day. This place is spacious including several temples and traditional gardens. Due to time limits I was only able to see one of them (Nanzenin), but it was so worth it. The combination of gray, pink and off-white looks so wonderful photos.

#7 Random streets where you see pinkness. Everywhere

This seems like a lame recommendation but it's so true. Some of my best photos were shot wandering around or transporting from one location to the next. Cherry blossom is literally everywhere in Japan - it's nearly impossible to visit all the recommended spots you can find on the internet and miss out the opportunity to discover your own. Of course when it comes to work, I have a bunch of starred coordinates in my Google map to ensure we'll get the best results, but it's always nice to go on an adventure together and create something one of a kind.

Vineyard Summer Wedding in Orangerie d’Heerstaayen | Trudy & Kevin

Fine_Art_Bruidsfotografie_Orangerie_Heerstaayen_Netherlands_by_C

Trudy & Kevin had a French vineyard inspired summer wedding on a beautiful day in August. With a color palette of dusty blue, blush and a pop of yellow, all 3 venues (civil ceremony, church ceremony and reception) went cohesively well in terms of atmosphere and feel.

This wedding is also featured on Hochzeitsguide!

French vineyard wedding in the Netherlands

After their first look at the garden of bride’s family home surrounded by vines, grapes and flowers, they drove a classic Opel Kadett in the loveliest shade of dusty green to the venue of the civil ceremony, Oudheidskamer, an ancient city hall of Ridderkerk where the couple is from. After that they continued to the church of Kijfhoek for God’s blessing. It’s an exquisite little church from 13th century, where time seems to have stood still. Trudy arranged “You’ll never walk alone” for the exit song as a surprise for Kevin.

Reception was held at the couple’s love-at-first-sight venue Orangerie d’Heerstaayen. It’s a perfect French-style countryside mansion, with a glass roof that allows beautiful natural light and protect from bad weather at the same time. We made the use of the venue’s cute little vineyard and shot the couple photos in between the vines and grapes. The venue also has its own farm, so all the decorative herbs, branches, oranges, lemons, and seasoned flowers are picked freshly from the farm. Gypsophila and ribbons were wrapped around the candle wreaths to give it a soft romantic touch. With rustic walls and old French style furnitures, and large orangery pots with plantsit looked like a scene from an old French movie.

Italian Villa Elopement near Milan | Tina & Jay

Italian Villa Wedding in Castello Di Tassara

This summer I went to Milan for Tina & Jay's elopement in a countryside villa in the mountains. They chose Castello Di Tassara, a villa that looks right out of a middle-age fantasy. It locates in the beautiful hills of Emilia-Romagna region, approximately 2 hours drive from Milan. After arriving at the villa on day 1, we had some free time checking out the venue, hanging by the pool, photographing the astonishing view of the hills right outside our bedroom windows.

Day 2 started with a boudoir session with Tina early morning. The villa has various stunning rooms and hallways, perfect when the weather is unpredictable in the mountains. It was a moody and quiet morning; the rain kept falling while Tina wandered around the hallway barefoot, listened to the raindrops and read books. It felt like a poet.

Then the rest of the day turned out to be dry and sunny. Tina & Jay had their elopement in the village church, then continued the photoshoot around the streets of Tassara. The light, the energy, the scenery.. everything was perfect. I also helped them prepare a table for two and enjoyed a bottle of champaign together. We ended the day driving out to the grape-yards for a breathtaking sunset and some laughters. It was simply magic.

Thank you Tina & Jay, you guys were like old friends in those 2 days and it was one of the best experiences I've ever had in this profession. Xx
